A Walk for a Meaningful Life..... Padayatra

The Padayatra concluded at Wardha on 28th Feb 2006 and the oath will be taken in Nagpur on 2nd March. Please click here for detailed schedule and location.

The Padayatra is a walk through the drought affected areas of Maharashtra. The participants, you and I, the "drought warriors", cover over 900 kms over 2 months, starting at dawn on the first day of 2006 from Kasari village in Beed district and concluding on 28th February at Sevagram Ashram in Wardha.

The purpose of the Padayatra is to meet the people affected by the drought, experience the drought, assess the situation and trigger a process of enquiry and transformation. Teams of trained drought warriors will be visiting and assessing the villages over 2-3 days before the padayatris, collecting data, stories and experiences of the people. This knowledge and data, along with the padayatris' experiences will help trigger follow up projects for the sustainable development of the villages. The intention of the Padayatra is to leave each village only after a concrete followup plan is formulated.

Join us in this walk for a meaningful life...

How do I participate?

Since last two years, we are trying to address hunger, poverty and drought in Maharashtra, under the campaign "Eradicate Drought, Save Humanity". As we worked, we have realised the seriousness of these problems, and also the extent of work that needs to be done to reduce hunger and poverty in Maharashtra. A chain of programs cannot prevent drought, merely announcing new schemes cannot prevent farmer's suicides. We have also learnt that only sloganeering cannot end hunger in Maharashtra, but that a broad-based program involving many people is needed.

With this in mind, we are organising the Padayatra.

Green Earth is the secretariat of this campaign and is coordinating the Padayatra along with more than 50 other organizations. Green Earth is also hosting this site.
